Dr. Jas Chahal appointed as Interim Head, Division of Orthopedic Surgery—Women’s College Hospital

Dr. David Urbach announced that UTOSM staff Dr. Jas Chahal has been appointed as Interim Head, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery—Women’s College Hospital.
Jas is a fellowship trained orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon at Women’s College Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital with an interest in shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, and cartilage restoration. He completed his sports medicine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center with international experts in the field and worked as a fellow team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. His research interests include clinical outcomes research in sports medicine, as well as, translational work on the use of biologics and mesenchymal stem cells in treating orthopaedic conditions. Jas is also an orthopaedic consultant for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Most recently, Jas has completed his Master of Business Administration at Rotman and at the University of St. Gallen which has given rise to his passion for innovation in the context of local and national healthcare delivery.
Dr. Chahal will be replacing Dr. John Theodoropoulos, who is stepping down from his role as division head to focus on other priorities. Dr. Theodoropoulos played a crucial role in the growth and development of the orthopaedic sports medicine program at Women’s, including the move to the new hospital building and expansion of clinical services under the Post Construction Operating Plan. Dr. Theodoropoulos is an active staff member of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Department of Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital and Women’s College Hospital. His strong interest in teaching residents has earned him several teaching awards from the Department of Surgery at McGill University and many invitations to speak and present at continuing education seminars. As a distinguished and invited speaker, presenter and lecturer, he has contributed locally, provincially and nationally at meetings and conferences on topics such as ACL reconstruction, cartilage repair and tissue engineering and arthroscopic shoulder repair. He was a physician for the Men’s hockey tournament at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games and consults for several professional and amateur teams throughout the city.
An external review of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Women’s College Hospital in the Fall of 2020. The reviewer’s report will help inform future plans for the development of the division, which will be followed by a search for a permanent division head.
