Orthopaedic Reserach & Innvoation Take Center Stage at the 2019 COA

This years meeting combined the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies, showcasing advancements in Orthopaedic research and their translation to clinical practice. It was a wonderful opportunity as a clinical researcher and member of the Orthopaedic Clinical Coordinators Group (OCCG) to network, share perspectives, successes, and obstacles within the Orthopaedic research community, with the OCCG meeting kicking off day one, featuring an incredibly valuable talk from Vantage Bio Trials President Vatche Bartekian on effective project management and quality conduct of complex Orthopaedic research. This years combined meeting offered a diverse array of paper sessions, workshops, and symposia with topics ranging from the current status of bone marrow aspirate in basic science and clinical practice, to the use of machine learning to assess and predict fracture risk.

Presidential Guest Speaker, Neurologist, and Canada’s first female Astronaut, Dr. Roberta Bondar provided the keynote talk at the opening ceremonies, setting the tone for the conference by highlighting successful approaches to navigating the ever changing landscape within the surgical community, and the ongoing importance of collaboration, ambition, vision, and adaptation as pillars of success in Orthopaedics. With UTOSM representation seen across poster, workshop, and paper sessions, along with a number of UTOSM staff surgeons, fellows, and residents in attendance, it made for a truly memorable time in the beautiful city of Montreal. We look forward to attending and showcasing all that UTOSM has to offer again at next years milestone 75th annual COA in Halifax!
